I have a 14-year-old high school freshman son and I'm having trouble getting him re-interested in reading: he used to enjoy books pre-covid (pre-teenager) and I'm trying to rekindle that.
*trivia: the series is properly called the Heroic Misadventures of Hiccup (Horrendous Haddock the Third) Her twitter and book website should be easily findable if you want to try at contacting her directly. **if you want to see others' opinions/analysis/fanart, there's small groups of active book fans still out there and still posting! We're called Dragonites, and Cressida Cowell is nominally our Queen. An old reader can dream.-Ī person from the land of the vegetable-that-does-not-exist + the journal i heard about? and the Guide to Deadly Dragons itself (which contains spoilers)Īnd, well, Cowell did express interest in writing something HTTYD related some years ago.Maybe one day there'll be more.or a 2d animated adaptation.
And two short sidestories- one called How To Train Your Viking and the other Day Of The Dreader (maybe remembering that wrong). David Tennant returned to voice WOO too!Įxtra: There is one picture book which is actually the precursor to the first book- Hiccup the Viking who Was Seasick. So it'd have more impact to compare the new things she does with the drawings in that series to how HTTYD's illustrations evolve through a chronological readthrough.
B: because Cressida's drawings in WOO build upon the progression of drawings in HTTYD (from purposely scribbly and simple to deeper shaded with the occasional full page where the text is surrounded by Cressida's penmanship.).A: because the ending of book one was on par/imo somehow tonally even darker than the later HTTYD books where the series "growing up" really affects things.I recommend reading it after the HTTYD series Oh, and then there's the Wizard Of Once** series, also by Cowell- though I've only read books one and two.I'd suggest reading (and re-experiencing?) the print/pdf versions of the eleven books (with the pictures by the author)- which happen to be in this very collection, lucky you- and then reading book twelve (of 12) (maybe book and audiobook together).
perhaps even where other fans can see, because I feel a keen excitement hearing others' thoughts about this series and it's surprising depth)** I think it's always nice to reread to either prepare to read the continuation of something, find one specific answer, or when you've forgot things and so have a chance to experience it "blind" again.(and what's also nice is writing your observations and opinions and such down.
Whether you remember or not, Books 8-9 are where everything built up starts gaining speed, and book twelve is- well, that's for you to see. If you've listened to exactly eleven of those books*, then you stopped reading at a cliffhanger! You have found the exact nerd to ask! (How 410nate! :D) Finally Added Dork Diaries!
